Winter NAMM 2007 Wrap-up: The Stuff

Winter NAMM is a musician’s paradise - four days, 85,000 registrants, over 1500 exhibitors, and countless products to peruse. It’s majestic, it’s overwhelming, and it’s exhausting. That said, there’s not a whole lot new or innovative for drums. Sure, there are some new finishes, new woods and new wraps, but overall there aren’t really any must-have drum products. Even so, a few things caught my eye.

  • Mini rack from Gibraltar

If it's too cumbersome to drag around an entire Gibraltar rack system but youdd still like the flexibility that rack-mounting your drums and cymbals affords, check out these smaller, modular rack components.

  • Gibraltar Ultra Adjust Hi-Hat Stand

  • New look for Mapex Black Panther snare drums!

I'm in love with Black Panther snares. They are absolutely stunning and sound great. I currently own a hand hammered steel one, but I really want a hand hammered brass one. Unfortunately, the hammered brass snares come with gold hardware…until now. Marylon Steward, inside sales manager at Mapex, tells me that they have put the sleeker black hardware on all but a couple of the snares because of problems with the gold hardware and to update the looks. Mapex also added a beefier throw-off. Yes!

  • BASIX line of hardware and pedals

I examined BASIX hardware and pedals quite carefully and was impressed at the quality and low price. Definitely check them out.

  • Check out this DW pedal set up to hit the bottom of your floor tom. Clever!

  • DTS One Touch Tuning System

The DTS system threads through all the lugs on a drum so that you can tune the head equally across all the lugs with one turn. The product demonstration was quite impressive. Tuning drum heads never seemed so easy.

  • DVD Archive of Modern Drummer

Two years ago I remember reading in my favorite magazine, Modern Drummer, about a DVD archive of past issues with sound clips and interactive lessons and all sorts of great stuff. At $199 the price was a little steep for me at the time.  At NAMM I caught up with Modern Drummer vice president Kevin Kearns who tells me they have re-developed the DVD archive to be better than ever! It will release February 2007 at an affordable price point of $130.
